ABOUT JOHN COTTER
I graduated from the University of California, San Diego with a Bachelor's degree in Sociology. I taught elementary school in the Encinitas Union School District for 39 years, retiring in 2014. I'm married for over 37 years and have two adult sons. I also started a part time photography business, which I enjoyed for 27 years, building it from the ground up. Over the course of my two careers, certain themes kept re-occurring in my personal and professional life. Giving more than required; holding myself and others accountable for our actions; becoming more flexible in my thinking and in the realm of possibility in my life; seeking information for self growth in the form of forums, workshops, trainings and reading; seeking Balance to find fulfillment and an inner peace. Is this possible? I believe it is if we develop new ways of thinking, maintain a curiosity about the world, think the best of others without letting them take advantage of us, expect greatness in ourselves and see it and develop it in others. So now, as I continue with my life's journey, I start this consultancy. It is with great joy that I offer myself to you as you move on with your life's journey.

During this timespan, I started a part-time photography business as well as my teaching career. I photographed sports groups, family portraits and weddings. This process taught me the value of pre-planning for a photo event, how to perform under pressure, creating strong customer service channels of communication and follow-up, caring for and trusting my equipment, the highs and lows of entrepreneurship, and knowing that if I did not secure new work, there would be no income. After many years in this business, I closed it to continue to develop my craft as a teacher.
The lessons from my business helped me see that I could be entrepreneurial in the classroom as well. In my teaching career, I took the content I needed to teach and found innovative ways to present it to students, asking them for their feedback, making changes as needed and then adjusting the approach with each new class. This process has helped shape my thoughts about what is possible in life.
Math mentor teacher in the Encinitas Union School District. During this time, I was released from my classroom duties to instruct teachers in grades kindergarten through sixth grade. I prepared lessons to teach to specific classes in specific math topic areas. I also re-wrote our district's mathematics expectancies to update them. Lastly, I taught a six week class to teachers on the use of manipulative materials in math instruction to deepen student understanding of math concepts. This was a hands-on class where the teachers got to do activities with the materials. This experience was my first working with adults as an instructor, which added to my teaching repertoire.
Spring, 1998-Fall 2003
Helped my two sons identify their strengths and goals. Guided them as they navigated the college fairs, college nights at their high schools, research online and in college catalogs, scheduled SAT and ACT tests, obtained a NCAA Clearinghouse identification for my older son who considered playing college soccer. The results are my older son graduated from University of Denver with a Bachelor's Degree in Business. My younger son graduated from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo with a Bachelor's Degree in Forestry.
Semi-Finalist in the Carlsbad Chamber of Commerce Excellence in Education program. I entered the Entrepreneurship category for a Class Business Program I conducted with my class. The students made crafts to sell to each other and to students from other classes. They kept a journal of their business experiences, wrote an evaluation essay at the end of the school year and participated in an auction I created as a way to spend the money they earned during our program. I did receive $100.00 from the Chamber of Commerce to use in my classroom as a reward for being a semi-finalist.
Won the award for Best Entrepreneurship Program in the same Carlsbad Chamber Excellence in Education program. As the winner, I received a plaque, an award of $500.00 and the $100.00 award for being a semi-finalist. This was one of the highlights of my teaching career.
Attended a five day training from Quantum Learning Network to help teachers become more intentional about how they teach, and to learn to teach the 8 Keys of Excellence, a character development program. This five days transformed my sense of what was possible for me as a teacher. This program transformed my last six years of teaching.
January 2010-June 2012
Selected Teacher of the Year by my peers at Mission Estancia School. This was a great honor, based in part on the work I was doing to implement the new material from the Quantum Learning seminar the previous summer. I had the opportunity to speak to local service clubs about my selection as a Teacher of the Year and received plaques for this milestone. I also began to speak at school assemblies at Mission Estancia School to motivate students to live the character traits we were learning during the school year.
Retired from teaching after a 39 year career. I taught kindergarten through sixth grade during my student teaching and teaching career, all in the Encinitas Union School District.
Fulfilled my present dream, the creation of JC GLOBAL CONSULTING in Carlsbad, CA to share my perspectives on Life Balance and College Planning through Motivational Speaking events with people like you! I can help you move your life forward to achieve your goals.
